I'm moving into an apartment right off Fordham road, right near the #4 subway. What sold me on this place was the cheap rent and the proximity to the trains. I also liked all the nearby shops. I really think the reason the rent is cheap is because of the bad rep most of the Bronx has. I really think this neighborhood is going to face some major changes the next few years, especially considering how close it is to manhattan. I would really appreciate any insight from people who live or have lived there recently. What are the bad spots (if any) around there that I should be mindful of.
For those familiar with the Fordham section of the Bronx, how is it? Is it really getting better?
Lived on Kingsbridge and Sedgwick from 1991 to 1994, and by the #'s 1 and A trains from 1996-99. Still have a few friends up there, and i grew up by Pelham Pkwy. Truth be told i actually like it a bit better further north(the closer to Bedford pk the better), but there are some great old Houses and Buildings west of Jerome off Fordham. Unless you Smoke Pot or Like to score Hookers, stay away from St. James PK after dark(just north of fordham, BT Jerome and the concourse)
Capitol Diner on Sedgwick and Jerome has good pancakes, and there are some good bars(irish) on Bedford Pk Blvd and Jerome, and one on Kingsbridge and Jerome. And u already know there is plenty of shopping. Pizza Place on Jerome just north of Fordham(past the supermarket)makes great Hero's!(across from monroe college)....
Reply:Some dubious types hang out under the el, but in fact, you are right about the area. You know, I hope, that the Fordham Road bus also connects you to the #1 subway. Take the bus to the 207 Street stop on the el, and if you take it to the end, you are at the A train's beginning, a good way to assure a seat.
I didn't live there, but my mother and I would sometimes walk to where you are, and do some shopping. Shopping now looks even better than when we did that.
