Hi there. The other day I visited the Old People's Home near me, as I go to listen to their stories every Saturday morning.
However I witnessed something odd on my last visit that will stay with me until the end of my days. There was an old lady, without a human relative left, who was dying. I filed in behind the nurses as I thought I might offer some comfort, as a familiar face around the home.
Now this old lady's cat lived with her, and it was old itself. It was called Miggles, and never, ever meowed. It slept on the armchair at the foot of the lady's bed and rarely left it. However at the moment the lady died, something very strange happened. Miggles got off of her chair, hopped up on the bed, and stood on the lady's still chest, where she let out one long, haunting meow, then she curled up and went to sleep there until a nurse carried her away.
The next day I went in to collect my coat, which I had left behind, only to be told Miggles had died in the night.
Odd cat behaviour?
Have u ever heard of Greyfriars Bobby? Its a true story about a man who died in Edinburgh, Scotland. His scotty dog had laid on his grave everyday after he died until the dog itself died many years later. They are both buried in Greyfriars graveyard , Edinburgh. It similair thing happened in Glasgow, Scotland just a couple of months ago, a man died and his dog stayed with the body for ages after.
Reply:I've never experiencd that with my cat but have heard stories of them detecting smoke and . They era very intuitive animals my cat comes to my bedroom door so as I can put him out.
Reply:My cat just gives me filthy looks all the time. I don't think it would bother her if I 'passed away'.
Reply:I haven't had a personal experience of this but have read stories about animals (especially dogs) that are so in tune with their owners that they can predict, an epilepsy fit for example. There are dogs that can be specially trained to foresee this so i can't see why cat's wouldn't understand the passing of a much loved owner. I would imagine that is what happened here, the cat knew/sensed that her owner had passed and being an older animal itself 'gave up on life?' I don't see why that's not possible.
Reply:That has almost brought tears to my eyes. I now want to go home and cuddle both of my cats.
Reply:That beautiful story has made my day.....how wonderful.
Reply:I did read recently in one of the papers I think about a cat at a nursing home that had the uncanny ability to predict who was going to die. The nurses knew if the cat went into a particular room that that person was going to pass away within the next 24 hours.
Maybe they do have extra senses we don't.
Reply:my cat knows when i am ill, she stays on the bed next to me. I do think they have got an extra sense.
Reply:I had a cat we let outdoors but who returned everyday to sleep and eat. Everytime I was away from home the cat would disappear causing my significant other to worry, thinking the cat had run away. Without fail, whether I was gone a weekend or a week, as soon as I got home I would call for him as I went in the house. Within 10 min. Max would be at the door.
At one point I left my SO and could not take Max with me. I moved 200 km away. He disappeared the day I left. About 4 month later I took a trip back to pick up some furniture and stuff and as I drove down the main street of the small village and about 1 block from the house there was Max heading home. I pulled in the driveway as he came up the walk. My SO always said that the cat and I had esp (not on my part).
Max stuck around until the next day when I was ready to leave and was never seen again. Sad but true.
Reply:oh my goodness ~ thats so upsetting~ how sad ~ thats quite a bond
Reply:Thanks for sharing that story. I think animals are very in tune with their owners and the bond they have with us can be very strong. Animals have the ability to sense things we dont - my dog can tell when my husband is on his way home even before he reaches our door.
Reply:what a very sad, yet happy tale
i know my animals know when i am down or unwell, they are quiter than normal, and will sometimes come and sit will me, i find this very comferting
i dont think there are any answers but i am sure this sort of thing has happened before, i think animals are alot more intune than people give them credit for
