My therapist suggested today that I might be agoraphobic, mainly because I have trouble leaving and staying away from my apartment and feel very uncomfortable outside of the safety of familiar places and faces. (I won't go into details.) I am wondering what kind of therapy other agoraphobics have received. I am in traditional psychotherapy now, but think I might benefit better from cognitive behavioral therapy, both for this and my OCD/depression.
How has your doctor/therapist treated your agoraphobia?
I dealt with agoraphobia, and well, Lexapro, and Xanax got me out of it. I am no longer on either one of those meds, I now take Klonopin, and Effexor XR, but to get me out of my house, I give all the credit to Lexapro, and Xanax!

Reply:It was helpful to learn that someone was able to get so much better--it gives me some hope. I was just hoping for more advice on the therapy end. I didn't mean to be so harsh. I apologize. I hope the med combo I'm on now will be helpful. Thanks. Report It

Reply:I was a prisoner in my own home for two years back in the 1970's. The treatment for agoraphobia was not very good back then but, I found an article in the readers digest that told about desensitization sessions. It was the most difficult thing I have ever done but, with help and family support I made it to the classes. I found out I was not alone (huge Epiphany).
I found this for you:
Go online and find a therapist in your area who specializes in phobias. Or call the National Mental Health Association at 800-969-NMHA for help with affordable referrals.
I wish you the best.
